This edition of the three Gymnopédies by Erik Satie offers a carefully edited version of these short, atmospheric pieces that can be considered early examples of ambient music. Written in 3/4 time, the compositions share a common theme and similar structure. The three Gymnopédien are characterized by their familiar melancholic melodies, which create a piquant, mournful effect through deliberate but slight dissonances against the harmony. This effect corresponds to the performance indications of the three pieces, which the composer calls (I) Lent et douloureux (painful), (II) Lent et triste (sad), and (III) Lent et grave (grave). This revised edition allows musicians to discover the subtle beauty and emotional depth of Satie's famous work and to learn it easily on the piano.
