One of two movements arranged for string quartet from ’The Seasons’ suite of piano pieces. Very adaptable for this medium, it may easily fit into any programme at Christmas. Associated score being ’Weihnachten’ (Christmas), taken from the same piano suite.
For this string quartet/orchestra project, which includes the above associated score, and the Valse op. 40 No 9, I worked from a book of Tschaikowsky piano pieces given to me by my grandmother. Herbert Smith, a son and pianist, and uncle who I never knew, died aged 19 during the 1914/18 war. The Tschaikowsky Album has served me well through my musical life - it is a Bosworth publication of Leizig dated 1896, and shows a remarkable sketch of the composer with a signature below using the above spelling. I reproduce this spelling then, and dedicate these string quartet arrangements to Herbert Smith.
