A verse-anthem for SSAT soli, SAATB chorus and organ by the early-17th-century composer John Holmes (d.1629), reconstructed from the organ score by Ian Payne. It was composed for liturgical use on Candlemas Day 1608 (i.e. 2 February 1609 by our reckoning), while he was organist at Winchester Cathedral. The text is uncertain, but was very probably Psalm 24 vv.7-10, which are closely associated with the Feast of the Purification; the metrical version by Sternhold and Hopkins fits Holmes's attractive music very well indeed.
