The 4 Lessons for a Cappella Voices, Op, 20, is dedicated to, and was performed by Coro Odyssea during the last week of December, 2005 in Lisbon as part of their winter concerts. My appreciation to Gonçalo Lourenço and his musicians for undertaking the performance of my music! JV (Jan. 2006)

Several translations of a prayer attributed to the 16th century Carmelite nun were used to compile the final text for this a cappella choral work. Though not "classically" reproduced here, the Renaissance motet provided the model for the posted piece. Conceptually, consideration should be given to keeping the performing ensemble small; as small as a quartet and nothing larger than 12 to 16 voices. Beyond 16 voices the intended intimacy would certainly be compromised. Consideration may also be given to, as in the earlier practice, doubling the voice parts with strings.

Opus 20 is dedicated to Coro Odyssea, I’d be remiss though not to acknowledge this work carries a debt of gratitude (and a dedication on this opening work) to Mr. Jay Anthony Gach and his wonderful composition for voices, Hashir Hashem Luchem.
