Originally written to announce the entrance of the bride at a friend’s wedding in the mid 1970s, the piece was never performed and remained lost for over 20 years, only to fall out of an old textbook in the late 90s. Re-worked and now presented as the opening [of the Introduction, Allegro, & Finale for Brass Quintet], the work’s tone should be stately, suggesting a royal entourage. Starting at a ’piano’, the dynamic expressions should follow the music but always with an understated perspective. The repeated tones in each instrument should, at least psychologically for the player, be thought of as church bells pealing, almost to the point of pomposity. Always steady, NEVER rushed.
(this version has a few minor revisions May 3, 2014)
MP3 note: the mp3 file should be considered a performance guide, not necessarily taken as gospel (it does provide a better listen than does the SCORCH playback).
