Micro-Organ-Ism is meant to exploit the timbral qualities of the pipe organ, setting a mood of meditation, enveloping the listener in ever changing washes of color. The notes are easy, the style is not so much minimalist, bur borrows the idea of repetitiveness, just not so minutely (in spite of the title). The specific registrations are left up to the player (the mp3 is an example, albeit a digitally created one, of how I think it could sound).

Subsequent ruminations on this work, which is only fair as it is meant to be meditative:

This work is amongst my personal favorites. I have come to feel in Micro-Organ-Ism is created a metaphor for our species. [I believe] We all are created by the same maker, the originator of life as we know it. By design the underlying traits of that creation are reasonably redundant and readily recognizable no matter what variation or which adornment is applied (i.e. DNA mappings in recent years show commonality of the DNA sequence amongst a wide variety of creatures). The like-ness of our being should be embraced while celebrating the differences. Unfortunately we spend inordinate amounts of energy exploiting both these issues rather than embracing them for what they are meant to be. Again, you can see the cohesive plan of our creator, as noted, in the DNA sequences science has brought into view; the many traits carried over in many species sharing this space. The variety of our differences provides the interest that should propel us forward, unfortunately, the overwhelming sentiment seems to demand a conformance that was never planned, and is bearing down on humankind, holding us back; IMHO.

Composer's note 9/26/2012: I recently came upon a Shel Silverstein poem that sums up my thoughts. Without delving into his text, the germinating idea is that when the lights are off, it's all the same and (the final line . . .) "maybe God should turn out the light." So organists, dim the house lights and play on.
