MUSIC FOR A JUBILEE was commissioned by the Truro Sinfonia for their Jubilee concert in the Hall for Cornwall, Truro, on 6th July 2002, being the 50th Jubilee Celebration year for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The piece is in one movement with five contrasting sections. The initial theme appears in various guises throughout, thus linking the sections together. This theme is of a ceremonial nature and makes much use of the brass section. The 6/8 section which follows is lively and could suggest the Queen’s love of horses and riding. The central slow “movement” highlights the strings section; a new theme represents solemn thoughts and remembrance, particularly of the recent deaths of Princess Margaret and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. The fourth section is scherzo-like in character, shades of the opening theme appearing above a dotted pattern as well as the theme from the slow section now transformed. The “finale” binds both themes together with the 6/8 rhythm, using full orchestral forces. © JUDITH BAILEY, CORNWALL 2002
