Originally composed in 1974 with a different title, this composition was greatly revised and re-titled in 2001, then revised again for publication in 2011. It employs a free variation form consisting of the theme, six variations and coda, all falling into an overall fast-slow-fast format. It is modeled on Persichetti’s Masquerade for Band, but while the form is derived from that work, this one is on a somewhat smaller scale. The new title, a loose synonym for "masquerade," was chosen as a nod to its inspiration.
