Jan Moeyaert
Belgium
Jan Moeyaert (Ghent, 1981) took his first musical steps as a member of the Flanders Boys Choir. In 1999 he received a medal for organ with greatest distinction and became a laureate in the national ‘Axion Classics’ music competition. He studied musicology at the universities of Leuven (B) and London (UK). In London, he immersed himself in the English choral tradition, both as a singer and as an organist. After university, he studied piano, organ, harpsichord and music theory at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels, and he also followed masterclasses for fortepiano and accompaniment.
Keyboards:
In addition to teaching and accompanying in the music schools of Gentbrugge and Hamme, he works as harmonium-player and organist in the Belgian National Orchestra, the orchestra of the Munt (Royal Opera in Brussels) and the Symphony Orchestra of Flanders. He has worked as repetitor for the Brussels Operetta Theatre, and he is much in demand as coach and accompanist for auditions, recitals and masterclasses. He has performed as a soloist with orchestras (concertos by Bach, Beethoven, Liszt), and he gives regular concerts as a chamber musician, on all keyboard instruments. Since 2022, he also works as piano and harpsichord accompanist at the School of Arts in Ghent.
Choirs:
Choral singing is a life-long passion. After a few years of singing lessons, and an immersion in the English choral tradition, Jan has been singing (semi-)professionally for over 20 years, and has sung the bass part in both early music and contemporary vocal ensembles. In 2007, he founded the Brussels Chamber Choir, together with his wife, Helen Cassano, who conducts the choir. He is also assistant-conductor and composer-in-residence of the BCC. He currently also sings with SWARA vocal ensemble and the Ghent Singers and he conducts the vocal ensemble of the Great Synagogue of Europe in Brussels.
Composing:
In 2000, Jan became a laureate of the Aquarius competition for young composers. He composes mostly for the Brussels Chamber Choir. He is occasionally commissioned, recently in Armenia, Germany, and Canada. His music was also performed in the U.K., the U.S., Canada, the Netherlands, Italy, Indonesia and Latin America.
