When I first composed the (at the time) single-movement Simple Sextet in 2005 for the Interlochen composer's camp, I also had started a more lyric piece and had written about a minute of it, before abandoning it and writing what ultimately became the Simple Sextet.
Sometime later, I interpreted the Simple Sextet to be the last movement of a full, multiple-movement piece, and wrote a first movement, which I finished in 2018.
Ironically, I had no plans to include a middle slow movement (aside from in 2009 when I wrote an opening that I then decided to use for the second movement of my Ragtime Concerto) until I stumbled on my original alternate sketch for the 2005 camp on October 2023, with the innocuous name "Sextet B" on my hard disk. I reasoned that it would be perfect, and finished it up.
To this day, only the last movement has ever been performed.
