This piece adds to the underdeveloped library of arrangements for double reed ensembles while highlighting one of Brazil's most virtuosic composers, Francisca "Chiquinha" Gonzaga. The lightly dancing melody of her tango is a perfect match for the timbre of double reeds, and would be adequately challenging for players of many skill levels.
This arrangement makes use of both rhythmic and dynamic contrast to keep both the players and the audience interested. Each part is given its opportunity to shine, and also opportunities to rest.
The melodic call and response between the first and second oboe should be accentuated by having the players sit on opposite sides of the group when performing. I've also included an optional english horn part, though the arrangement plays perfectly fine as a quartet.
