Haydn’s Concerto in C for Organ and Orchestra of Strings, Trumpets, and Timpani is perhaps his earliest concerto and dates from the decade when Haydn was a freelance musician in Vienna. Though published in 1803, this music was likely written for performance in 1756 when Haydn’s own sister-in-law took the veil of the Poor Clares. The solo arrangement compresses the orchestral parts, allowing performance by a soloist.
