This piece was commissioned by the string department of Instrumental Music School Services, Department of Education, Perth, Western Australia, to be played by combined school string orchestras of students in their first year of learning violin, viola, cello and double bass. It is in the Aeolian mode, using open strings and a limited diatonic note range of notes. There are additional optional basic harmony parts for violin, viola and cello. Mystery Island was first performed in September 2014 at multiple Beginner String Workshops run by IMSS, and has been used for the same purpose every year since then.
