This is an arrangement of a well known shape-note tune found in an American tunebook called the Sacred Harp. You may recognize it as it was sung during a scene in the movie "Cold Mountain" starring Nicole Kidman.
This arrangement presents this song as it would be sung if you went to a Sacred Harp singing. To give you an idea of how the shapenotes work, I used actual shapenote notation and put the solfege syllables (called fasola) underneath it. It is customary to sing through the piece once using syllables and then again singing the actual text.
Please note that the second sopranos and the tenors have the melody. This is because in the shapenote tradition, women and men sing the melody which is in the tenor part.
