I am pleased to present to you my Fantasia for Clarinet and Piano in C minor. This lyrical piece is my first for clarinet and piano, and I hope I have done some justice to this beautiful woodwind instrument.

There are deep personal feelings enshrined in my fantasia, which portray many of the emotions of a farewell. The music is sometimes dramatic and agitated, sometimes calm and full of reflection and, at other times, full of longing for what is left after a poignant departure. I will provide no further explanation for the title of my piece, hoping that listeners would find its meaning by themselves.

Recently, I have been deeply honoured by two composers that graciously adapted the Farewell Fantasia for different instruments. First came a beautiful and rich-sounding arrangement for string orchestra made by fellow composer and friend Matthew Scott Philips. Next came my friend Virgil Barstad, who produced a version for piano and violin instead of clarinet. Finally, yet another arrangement for a smaller instrumentation (violin, guitar and cello) was made by Mathew Scott Phillips.

The violin scoring in Virgil?s version has great detail and intensity. Both composers understood very well the meanings that I wanted to convey with the music, and came up by very honest, sensitive and musical settings of the work for the new instruments. For this I am very grateful to both and I fully endorse and recommend these two new versions of the Fantasia.

Virgil Barstad (violin) and Merilee Terry (piano) successfully premiered the violin and piano version at the Orchestra of Southern Utah aaual concert series, Cedar City, Utah, in September 2001. A recording of the music was produced on CD. This is the first of my compositions that has been publically premiered.

After listening to the original version for clarinet and piano, I recommend that you hear the other arrangements, also available in Score Exchange.

Note: Version update 16/6/2002 is an update to correct some small matters of notation, improve presentation and make small changes in some of the dynamics. Second update 7/9/2003 with added ossia bars for clarinet at 91-99, easier to play.
