As they exchange motifs, the piano eventually takes up the rapid, staccato phrases leading to a more expansive section, with the ‘cello’s strident line playing out against block chords from the piano. The piano responds with a quieter presentation of the same material before the troubled staccato mood returns rising to a high, extended climax on the ‘cello. The movement then recalls themes and passages from the two previous Bagatelles, weaving them together to bring the third Bagatelle to a furious conclusion.
The attached audio file is a recording of its first performance by Neil Crossland (piano) and Hannah Lewis (cello) made in London in September 2024.
