“A Jelly-Fish” was one of Marianne Moore’s early poems and demonstrates her love for using animals as a platform to present her observations on life. That intention became central to my thought-process while composing this piece, extending to doing research on the movements of jellyfish in an effort to capture some of their hypnotic motions in the rhythm and textures the instruments utilize. The motion of any creature is dependent on the resistance they encounter. Naturally, this made it necessary to mimic the resistance from water which is integral to the jellyfishes suspended movement. The double bass and the voice embody this unique pattern through drone pitches and fluctuations around the drone, giving the feel of pulsating slowly but erratically around a tonal center.
