Sullivan’s Imperial March was composed for the opening of the Imperial Institute in 1893. The Institute was founded in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee and the Queen performed the foundation stone laying ceremony. The building was completed some six years later and the State Opening ceremony took place on 10 May 1893 and Sullivan provided this suitably grand ’piece d’occasion’, scored for a large orchestra. Miles Harwood has transcribed the work for a standard symphonic/concert band.
